[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] The death toll from the train collision that occurred on the morning of the 7th (local time) in southern Pakistan has risen to around 160.
According to AP News and local media on the 8th, an official stated, "As a result of the search operation last night, 12 more bodies were recovered, increasing the death toll to 63," and the number of injured is over 100.
The number of casualties continued to rise as rescue operations progressed. On the afternoon of the accident day, the number of dead and injured was estimated to be around 35 and 64, respectively. However, by that night, the death toll had increased to 51, and the number of injured was counted to be over 100.
On the 7th, near Darkishi in the Ghotki district of Sindh province, two trains traveling in opposite directions collided. The Millat Express, traveling north from southern Karachi, derailed first and toppled onto the adjacent track, and then the Syed Express, heading south toward Karachi, crashed into it. Approximately 1,100 passengers were on board the two trains at the time.
Military personnel were deployed to the accident site, and heavy machinery cleared vehicle debris during the search operation. Helicopters were also mobilized to assist in transporting the injured. The rescue operation was completed around noon on the 8th, and currently, repair work on the railway tracks is underway to resume train operations.
