Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Seong Jang-hyun) has completed the establishment of the ‘Smart Free Zone’ at Kkumnamu Complex Town (329 Baekbeom-ro) and started operating the facility.
The Smart Free Zone is 47.25㎡ in size and located on the first floor of the main building of the Complex Town. It is equipped with an unmanned book reservation lending and return machine, and domestic and international travel virtual reality (VR) kiosks (unmanned information terminals). The available hours are daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.
The unmanned book reservation lending and return machine is managed and operated by the Kkumnamu Library on the third floor of the Complex Town. Any registered member of the Yongsan-gu public library (integrated member, Chaegieum member) can apply for up to two books per person that are in ‘available for lending’ status through the Kkumnamu Library website.
After receiving a lending notification text message, members can visit the Smart Free Zone with their membership card to borrow the books. The lending period is two weeks. If the lending is suspended or the lending machine’s capacity limit is exceeded, reservation lending cannot be used.
The unmanned return machine is located to the right of the reservation lending machine. Place the book to be returned on the reader at the bottom of the device, and when the top slot opens, insert the book.
A district official said, “Even if the library is closed due to COVID-19 or holidays, the unmanned reservation lending and return service is available 365 days a year,” adding, “It will be convenient for office workers commuting to and from work.”
Kkumnamu Library is Yongsan-gu’s representative public library, holding 45,000 new and bestseller books. It opened together with the Kkumnamu Complex Town at the end of 2017. In response to the COVID-19 situation, currently only 30% of the seating capacity is allowed in the reading room.
The domestic and international travel VR kiosks are placed opposite the unmanned book reservation lending and return machine. Users can explore domestic and international tourist attractions in clear resolution and play simple games like spot the difference.
The district plans to regularly hold ‘flea market (plimarket)’ events operated directly by teenagers using the Smart Free Zone space.
Seong Jang-hyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “We partially expanded the Kkumnamu Complex Town to create a new space that can be open at all times,” and added, “We will work closely with public officials to provide more diverse services to residents.”
The Kkumnamu Complex Town is open from Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
