National Gwacheon Science Museum and Korean Academy of Science and Technology Agree to Cooperate on Artifact Collection, Preservation, and Promotion
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] Government-affiliated institutions are actively stepping up to collect, honor, and promote the historical materials of Korea's great scientists who have left their marks in history, such as Lee Whi-so and Woo Jang-choon.
The Gwacheon National Science Museum and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology signed a memorandum of understanding on the 7th to investigate, collect, and preserve materials related to distinguished contributors to science and technology. The two institutions agreed to cooperate in expanding social awareness of these contributors by investigating, collecting, and preserving scientific and technological materials related to the 69 individuals selected so far, as well as those selected annually.
The Science and Technology Archives at the Gwacheon National Science Museum have been collecting materials related to representative Korean scientists and technologists, including 679 items from 25 modern and contemporary scientists such as Lee Whi-so, Woo Jang-choon, and Ahn Dong-hyuk, who are enshrined in the "Hall of Fame for Scientists and Technologists." In 2020, the museum attracted attention by collecting over 300 scientific and technological materials from Professors Kwon Yi-hyuk (1923?2020) and Lee Ho-wang (1928?), which trace the history of vaccine development in Korea's health and medical sciences.

The Academy has also been selecting and honoring distinguished contributors to science and technology annually since 2017 through its Science and Technology Contributors Support Center. Last year, nine individuals, including the late Kim Yong-gwan, who presented a scientific vision for the Korean Peninsula during the Japanese colonial period, were newly designated as distinguished contributors. Additionally, to record and widely publicize the contributions of these pioneers who laid the foundation of Korean science and technology, the Academy produces and promotes materials such as the 『Republic of Korea Science and Technology Contributors Honor Roll』, card news, and other promotional content.
