Gyeongnam Province Implements Summer Agricultural Disaster Countermeasures
All-Out Efforts for Summer Disaster Prevention Against Heavy Rain and Typhoons
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 7th that it will implement the 'Summer Agricultural Disaster Countermeasures' to prevent agricultural damage from natural disasters during the summer season.
This summer, 1 to 3 typhoons are expected to affect the Korean Peninsula, and localized heavy rainfall due to climate change is a concern.
Accordingly, Gyeongnam Province plans to operate an 'Agricultural Disaster Countermeasure Situation Room' for rapid response in the event of natural disasters.
The situation room consists of three teams: the General Team, the Initial Response Team, and the Recovery Support Team, and will operate from the 14th to October 15th.
In addition, a comprehensive inspection of hydraulic facilities such as drainage pumps in the province will be conducted, and drainage channels around orchards and horticultural facilities, as well as disaster prevention facilities such as support structures, will be reinforced.
When weather warnings are issued, farmers will be informed through text messages and village broadcasts to prepare accordingly.
In the event of a disaster, an organic reporting system will be maintained between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs ↔ Gyeongsangnam-do ↔ city/county ↔ eup/myeon/dong, and an on-site response team will be dispatched for emergency recovery.
The province plans to support disaster recovery costs for affected farms as soon as detailed investigations are completed.
Disaster recovery costs will be provided per farm as pesticide costs (2.49 million KRW per hectare for orchards, 740,000 KRW for general crops) or labor costs (3.8 million KRW per hectare for general crops).
For farms with severe damage, additional support will be provided for living expenses, high school tuition, and deferment or interest reduction on agricultural loan repayments.
Farmers who have subscribed to crop disaster insurance will receive insurance payouts after on-site inspections.
In the case of apples, the average insurance payout per hectare for farms that suffered crop disasters last year was 10.3 million KRW.
