'Samsung Display Labor and Management Facing Strike Crisis to Resume Wage Negotiations on the 2nd'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] The labor and management of Samsung Display, which was on the brink of a strike, have decided to resume wage negotiations.
The Samsung Display labor union announced on the 1st that the '2021 Wage Negotiation Representative Negotiation' will resume on the 2nd. Attending the representative wage negotiations will be Kim Jeongran and Lee Changwan, co-chairpersons of the Samsung Display labor union, and two HR executives from the company are expected to participate.
This resumption of negotiations came after a meeting on the 25th of last month between President Choi Juseon and co-chairpersons Kim Jeongran and Lee Changwan. At that time, the union side demanded that the company disclose supporting data related to a new negotiation proposal for wage talks, criticizing the company for not presenting a proper negotiation plan so far. President Choi reportedly promised to instruct the company’s negotiation team to engage sincerely in the talks.
The union had been conducting wage negotiations with the company since early this year but declared the breakdown of wage negotiations at the end of April, citing issues with the company’s negotiation attitude. Subsequently, the union secured legal strike rights by gaining majority support in a strike action vote among members and receiving a 'mediation suspension' ruling from the Central Labor Relations Commission of the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
A union official stated, "The company has expressed a desire to resume collective bargaining, and we will confirm whether there is any concrete progress through negotiations," adding, "If the company maintains its previous position during the talks, we may respond strongly without further negotiations, based on the CEO’s decision."
