The Korea Film Council announced on the 1st that the three major multiplex chains will offer discounts to COVID-19 vaccine recipients throughout June to encourage vaccination and mark the end of the pandemic. The discounted prices are 5,000 KRW at Megabox and 6,000 KRW at CGV and Lotte Cinema (excluding special theaters), regardless of weekdays or weekends. This is about half the regular ticket price and applies only to on-site purchases. Proof of vaccination or a certificate must be shown. At Megabox, popcorn and soda can also be purchased for 2,000 KRW and 1,000 KRW respectively.
Lee Chang-moo, chairman of the Korea Film Council, said, "We prepared this campaign hoping that many citizens will participate in vaccination and that we can quickly return to ordinary daily life as before." He added, "We look forward to many audiences enjoying their leisure time by watching movies at theaters." The theater industry has been gradually recovering since mid-last month. The blockbuster "Fast & Furious 9: The Ultimate" opened the way. It was released on the 19th of last month and attracted 1,790,166 viewers by the 31st. "Cruella," released on the 26th, drew 331,870 viewers in six days. The total number of viewers last month was 4,380,150, the highest monthly record this year.
