Following Florida and Georgia, Efforts to Restrict Voting Hours and Absentee Voting Spark Criticism as an "Attack on Sacred Voting Rights"
"An Attack on Sacred Voting Rights" Criticism
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] U.S. President Joe Biden strongly condemned the legislative efforts to restrict voting rights in Texas on the 29th (local time), following similar moves in Georgia and Florida, calling it an attack on democracy.
In a statement released that day, President Biden said, "Attacking the sacred right to vote," and criticized, "These frequent acts witnessed this year are attacks on democracy and are unilaterally targeting Black and people of color."
He added, "This is wrong and un-American," emphasizing, "What we need to do in the 21st century is to make it easier for all voters to vote, not harder."
He repeatedly urged Congress to pass the Democrats' alternative bills, the "For the People Act" and the "John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act." He also appealed for bipartisan support from all Americans to protect democracy and voting rights.
The Texas voting restriction law, made into an agenda item that day, includes provisions similar to those being pursued in other Republican-strong states such as Florida, Arizona, and Georgia, including banning 24-hour voting and prohibiting the use of ballot drop boxes.
Some of these Republican-leaning states have responded to former President Donald Trump's claims of "election fraud" by pushing for election law revisions that restrict mail-in and absentee voting, drawing opposition from the Democratic Party.

According to the political media outlet The Hill, the Democrats are currently filing lawsuits against some states where legislation has actually progressed, and warned that Texas will also become a target of litigation if the law is enacted.
