The Spread of 'Security Hallyu' in Southeast Asia... Korean Police Leading the Way in Enhancing Cyber Investigation Capabilities
Digital Innovation Driven by ASEAN
Korean Police as a 'Role Model'
Training Scheduled in Indonesia and the Philippines
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Korean police are taking the lead in spreading the "security Hallyu" by transferring the latest cyber investigation techniques to "New Southern countries" (ASEAN + India).
The National Police Agency announced on the 30th that from the 31st of this month to the 11th of next month, it will provide training on Korean police cyber investigation techniques such as cybercrime response strategies, information analysis and management, and digital forensics to mid-level police officers in Indonesia for two weeks.
Then, from July 12th to 23rd, for two weeks, it will provide training on strategies to respond to international cybercrimes such as online fraud and gambling, distribution of sexually exploitative videos, the dark web, and cryptocurrency tracking techniques to cyber investigators of the Philippine police.
These activities by the Korean police are being carried out in line with the government's New Southern Policy. Since the COVID-19 situation, Southeast Asian countries have been focusing on digital innovation such as cybersecurity and non-face-to-face transitions.
Korean police cyber investigation techniques are well known to be among the best in the world. A representative case is the arrest of the largest dark web site for sexually exploitative materials, "Welcome to Video," through international cooperation. The National Police Agency has operated 14 training courses for ASEAN countries based on such cybercrime investigation capabilities even before COVID-19, educating 235 police officers, and has operated a joint master's degree program in cyber investigation in cooperation with Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia.
Despite COVID-19, the Korean police are actively supporting the enhancement of cybersecurity capabilities in these countries through non-face-to-face training methods. The National Police Agency plans to establish a sustainable security cooperation system with ASEAN countries and continue active support to strengthen cybersecurity of ASEAN police agencies through the "Korea-ASEAN International Crime Investigation Capability Enhancement Project" with Asiana Pol starting this November.
