[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Gang-wook] It has been revealed that drunk driving traffic accidents have occurred at a rate of about 50 cases per day over the past three years. By age group, drunk driving accidents were most frequent among those in their 20s and 30s.
According to an analysis by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority on the 29th, an average of about 50 drunk driving accidents occurred daily over the past three years (2018?2020). Additionally, the number of drunk driving fatalities caused by drivers aged 21 to 30 was the highest.
The number of deaths due to drunk driving has been decreasing annually. However, last year, the number of accidents (1,539 cases) and injuries (2,102 people) increased compared to the previous year.
By age group, fatalities caused by drunk drivers aged 21 to 30 accounted for 23.5%, the highest proportion, while the occurrence rate was highest among drivers aged 31 to 40 at 23.2%, indicating that drunk driving accidents are frequent among drivers in their 20s and 30s.
In particular, drivers under the age of 20 had the lowest rates of drunk driving occurrences and fatalities, but the fatality rate was analyzed to be 3.7%, more than twice the average fatality rate.
By time of day, the proportion of drunk driving fatalities between 22:00?24:00 and 00:00?02:00 was 15.1% and 14.8%, respectively, indicating these as vulnerable times for drunk driving.
By month, the highest number of drunk driving fatalities occurred in August (10.5%), and drunk driving traffic accidents were concentrated in April (8.9%).
By industry, drunk driving fatalities involving rental cars numbered 42, accounting for 63.6% of all business-use drunk driving fatalities. It was analyzed that 1 in 7 rental car fatalities (14.8%) lost their lives due to drunk driving.
