Weekday Accommodation Bookings Increase by Over 25% Year-on-Year
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gangwon Tourism Foundation announced on the 28th that the Gangwon 'Workation' specialized product, planned in collaboration with Interpark at the end of March, sold 8,238 nights within two months of its launch.
'Workation' is a portmanteau of Work and Vacation, referring to a new work and travel trend in the with-COVID era where people combine work and rest at vacation spots such as mountains and beaches.
According to the Tourism Foundation, this result greatly exceeded initial expectations and was analyzed to have contributed to attracting weekday tourists to Gangwon Province and extending their length of stay.
This workation specialized product was designed from the planning stage to be available only on weekdays and for a minimum of two consecutive nights, not including weekends.
According to Interpark's analysis, weekday accommodation bookings in Gangwon Province through the workation product increased by more than 25% compared to the same period last year, and especially, bookings of three or more nights on weekdays totaled 1,326 nights, marking a 13% increase.
The most popular workation travel destinations within Gangwon Province were Gangneung, accessible by KTX train, accounting for 21.9%, and Sokcho, which has both mountains and sea, accounting for 21.5%. Following these were Goseong, Samcheok, Jeongseon, and Suni.
In particular, Goseong County saw a 97% increase in weekday accommodations compared to the previous year, showing the largest growth in visitor numbers since the launch of the workation product.

Choi Dong-seok, head of the Domestic Marketing Team at the Tourism Foundation, said, "Along with the launch of the specialized product, we conducted online promotions using workation experience videos by YouTube creators and SNS channels," adding, "We plan to continue attracting customers by planning a second workation product."
