Hanwha to Supply Hydrogen to Hyundai Charging Stations
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Hanwha Solutions announced on the 27th that it will supply 48 tons of hydrogen for vehicle fuel to Hyundai Glovis over two years starting in July.
The hydrogen supplied by Hanwha Solutions is produced in the caustic soda production process at the Yeosu plant. When salt, the raw material for caustic soda, is dissolved in water and decomposed, hydrogen is generated. Unlike by-product hydrogen from typical petrochemical processes, hydrogen produced from saltwater does not emit air pollutants.
This hydrogen is refined to a purity of 99.999% for vehicle fuel and supplied to regional hydrogen refueling stations through Hyundai Glovis. Hyundai Glovis is expanding its hydrogen refueling network at highway rest areas and other locations. As the vehicle hydrogen refueling infrastructure grows, the supply volume will also increase.
Hanwha Solutions is building infrastructure across the entire process from hydrogen production to storage and transportation in line with the energy transition trend. The vehicle fuel hydrogen market is expected to grow to 370,000 tons annually and reach a scale of 3.2 trillion KRW by 2030, according to industry forecasts. The company has operated the saltwater electrolysis process for over 40 years. Based on this, it is also developing water electrolysis technology to produce green hydrogen using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.
The company plans to build water electrolysis facilities and refueling stations capable of producing up to 290 tons of green hydrogen annually in the Daegwallyeong area by the second half of next year, in collaboration with Gangwon Province and Korea Gas Technology Corporation. The facilities are expected to operate for the next 15 years. The company stated, "Starting with this project, we plan to gradually expand the supply of hydrogen for vehicle fuel and establish a hydrogen value chain foundation from production to supply."
