‘Urban Railway Line 2 Phase 1 Vehicle Depot’ Construction Progressing Smoothly
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Seon-gang] The Urban Railway Construction Headquarters of Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 26th that the construction of the vehicle depot, which plays a central role in the efficient operation and comprehensive management of Urban Railway Line 2, as well as the inspection and maintenance of vehicles, is progressing smoothly.
The Phase 1 vehicle depot for Urban Railway Line 2 is located on a site of 67,493㎡ at 591-5, Yuchon-dong, Seo-gu, and consists of 13 buildings including vehicle entry and exit tracks, a comprehensive management building, inspection shed, and substation.
Construction began in June last year and is scheduled for completion in 2023.
Currently, architectural and civil engineering works are being carried out simultaneously in preparation for the rainy season, and the underground framework construction of the comprehensive management building and inspection shed has been completed.
Pile construction for the material warehouse and departure inspection shed is being carried out simultaneously with soil removal and embankment filling, showing an overall progress rate of 10%.
Meanwhile, due to the incorporation of part of Hanam-daero 502-gil (a farm road) connecting Hanam-daero and Yudeok-ro into the vehicle depot, a temporary road has been opened to allow detours around the farm road crossing the project site until June to minimize inconvenience to companies in the Dongcheon Industrial Complex and road users. A permanent detour road will be established upon completion of the vehicle depot construction.

Jo Jae-young, head of the Architecture Division at the Urban Railway Construction Headquarters, said, “We will proceed with the construction of the urban railway vehicle depot in line with the planned schedule for Line 2 without any setbacks. Although there will be inconvenience due to the closure of the existing road when the temporary detour road opens in June, we will do our best to minimize traffic inconvenience and ensure safe construction by installing vehicle guidance lights, road mirrors, and widening the detour road.”
