Lee Jae-myung "Poor Military Meals Are Pitiful... Need to Introduce Military Human Rights Ombudsman"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, has argued that a military human rights ombudsman system should be introduced in response to the poor meal service situation in the military.
On the 22nd, Governor Lee said on Facebook, "This has been a problem for a long time, but it is regrettable and pathetic that it is still happening. Although I am not involved in military-related work, as a public official representing the people, I feel very ashamed and sorry."
He continued, "I also recalled the sharp words of President Roh Moo-hyun, 'You should be ashamed'. Looking at the photos submitted, it is unbelievable that the meals provided by the Republic of Korea, which boasts the world's 10th largest economy, to those who dedicate their youth for the country are like this," he pointed out.
Governor Lee also said, "The cause is either budget shortage and neglect or budget embezzlement crimes, with the latter being more likely, and either way, the problem is serious. If the soldiers had not had mobile phones, this would not have been revealed. The system to protect the human rights of soldiers needs a fundamental reexamination in light of this incident," he emphasized.

He added, "In addition to the poor meal service issue, there is a need to introduce the 'Military Human Rights Ombudsman' system to root out various abuses such as human rights violations, power harassment, and forced non-military labor within the military," he said.
