President Moon Meets US Vice President Harris... Strengthening Cooperation on North Korea Policy
Exchanging Views on the Development of the Korea-US Alliance and Global Cooperation... Also Discussing Support for the Korean-American Community in the US
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in, who is visiting the United States for the Korea-US summit, met with US Vice President Kamala Harris on the 21st (local time) and exchanged views on ways to cooperate for the development of the Korea-US alliance, resolving the North Korean nuclear issue, regional and global cooperation.
President Moon evaluated that the Korea-US alliance has been a linchpin for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia, and the world, serving as a model alliance, and urged expanding the horizon of cooperation between the two countries to create a better future for the Korea-US alliance together.
President Moon said that this visit to the US would be an opportunity to confirm the solidity of the Korea-US alliance through close communication between the two countries from the early days of the Biden-Harris administration. Vice President Harris said that the importance of the Korea-US alliance is being emphasized more than ever amid the US policy of prioritizing alliances.
President Moon appreciated the close communication and strong trust shown between the two countries during the review process of the Biden-Harris administration’s North Korea policy. He expressed hope that seamless cooperation would be maintained in the implementation of the US’s new North Korea policy for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Vice President Harris emphasized the importance of diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and expressed support for dialogue and cooperation between South and North Korea. She said that close cooperation with regional partners, including South Korea, would continue to achieve substantial progress on the North Korean nuclear issue.
Vice President Harris also stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of immigration issues from the three Northern Central American countries and requested Korea’s support and role.
President Moon and Vice President Harris evaluated that despite the global health crisis caused by COVID-19, the two countries have cooperated closely and agreed to continue vaccine-related cooperation for rapid crisis recovery.
The Blue House explained, "President Moon requested attention and support for the Korean community in the United States, and Vice President Harris acknowledged that the contributions of Korean Americans bring diversity and dynamism to American society." President Moon and Vice President Harris shared concerns about hate crimes against Asians.
