Statements from the Youth Strategy Meeting of the Youth Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea Seoul Metropolitan Party Headquarters?
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Youth Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan City Party of the Democratic Party of Korea held a youth strategy meeting of the Youth Committee on the 17th at the Seoul City Party's main conference room.
The event was attended by Ki-dong Min, Chairman of the Seoul City Party, Ki-young Han, Chairman of the Seoul City Party Youth Committee, and the Youth Committee leadership. Presentations were given by Kyunghwan Jang, Manager at Winzi Korea Consulting, and Kwangyong Go, Research Fellow at the Hope Institute, followed by discussions among the attending committee members on youth policies.
Manager Jang Kyunghwan stated, "It is still too early to say that the by-election defeat signals the beginning of the Moon Jae-in administration's lame duck period," adding, "It depends on how the Democratic Party innovates and reforms." He also emphasized, "What the youth of this era truly desire is a 'ladder of opportunity,' and they expect a leader who is a 'fair manager providing appropriate opportunities to those who make efforts.' This should be kept in mind in all matters."
Research Fellow Go Kwangyong diagnosed the anger of the 2030 generation as socio-economic and class-based anger, suggesting that a fundamental approach is needed to propose solutions to socio-economic issues such as employment, housing, debt, and work-family balance.
Specifically, he mentioned the need to improve the quality of jobs by bridging the gap between the primary and secondary labor markets, and to stabilize housing through expanding ultra-low interest, interest-free rental and home purchase loans for youth.
Chairman Ki-dong Min said, "There must be characteristics arising from the generational attributes of the youth, but the older generation is only familiar with their own youth period in the past, so there are aspects they do not understand," adding, "Rather than trying to understand, they try to engrave it."
He also stated, "It is necessary to give decision-making authority to the youth who are experiencing the characteristics of the era firsthand, accept that, and do what the Seoul City Party can do."

Youth Committee Chairman Ki-young Han concluded the meeting by saying, "Through today's meeting, I hope it becomes an opportunity to examine the sentiments of the youth revealed in the April 7 by-election and seek alternatives so that the Youth Committee and youth politics can grow and develop even a little," and added, "I expect the Seoul City Party Youth Committee to become the protagonist in creating a new history of youth politics in the 2022 presidential election and the nationwide local elections."
