Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police Conduct 'Intensive Crackdown' on Illegal Origin Labeling of Japanese Seafood
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is launching a focused crackdown on illegal origin labeling of Japanese seafood.
The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police announced on the 20th that from the 24th of this month to the 25th of next month, they will conduct an intensive investigation into illegal origin labeling of Japanese seafood at restaurants handling imported seafood, as well as distribution, processing, and sales companies within the province.
The main investigation targets include false or confusing origin labeling at restaurants and retail stores handling imported seafood, and origin forgery by distribution and processing companies. To verify the safety of imported seafood, random sampling for radiation testing will also be conducted concurrently.
Under the current Origin Labeling Act, false or confusing labeling of imported seafood as domestic or other origins is punishable by up to seven years imprisonment or a fine of up to 100 million won.
The province will notify the relevant authorities and take recall measures if radiation test results of imported seafood exceed the standard limits.

In Chi-kwon, head of the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police, emphasized, "This investigation is a preemptive measure to protect residents amid growing social anxiety about Japanese seafood," adding, "We will do our best to ensure food safety and establish a fair trade order."
