[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] More than 100 days have passed since the coup broke out in Myanmar, and the death toll has exceeded 800.
According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on the 18th, the confirmed number of deaths as of the previous day was 802. The number of people arrested and detained reached 5,210.
As the violent crackdown continues across Myanmar, the situation is worsening in Mindat, Chin State in the west, where the military and police have recently concentrated their offensive.
The military and police are using heavy weapons such as cannons, automatic firearms, and rocket-propelled grenades to suppress the civilian defense forces who are armed with hunting rifles and similar weapons.
AAPP reported that a 10-year-old girl who was hiding at home was critically injured by gunfire from the military and police.
The military and police are also known to be indiscriminately destroying houses and shops of Mindat citizens and looting property.
Thousands of residents have fled to the jungle, but AAPP stated that there is a severe shortage of food, medicine, and even shelter facilities to take refuge.
AAPP analyzed that the reason the military and police are violently suppressing a small town with a population of about 50,000 so harshly is to send a "warning message" that other cities or towns will face the same fate if they oppose the military regime.
Meanwhile, local media The Irrawaddy reported that after the military took control of Mindat, water supply was cut off on the morning of the same day, according to Mindat residents.
