SK Telecom Presents MEC Vision at 'AWS Summit 2021'
The Only Domestic Telecom Company to Attend as a Speaker, Introducing 'SKT 5GX Edge' and Presenting MEC Vision
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] SK Telecom announced on the 12th that it will participate in the largest cloud event, ‘AWS Summit Seoul 2021 Online (AWS Summit),’ to present its strategies and vision in the fields of mobile edge computing (MEC) and cloud business.
During the AWS Summit partner session, SK Telecom will be the only domestic mobile carrier to participate as a speaker, introducing its 5G edge cloud service ‘SKT 5GX Edge’ and various MEC application cases such as ▲contactless video conferencing ▲autonomous robots ▲augmented reality.
In December last year, SK Telecom commercialized ‘SKT 5GX Edge,’ the nation’s first 5G edge cloud service, in collaboration with AWS. SKT 5GX Edge is a distributed cloud service that installs cloud data centers at exchanges and base stations to process communication data at the network edge, significantly reducing the physical time and distance required for data processing.
SKT 5GX Edge, applied with SKT MEC technology, reduces communication latency by up to 60%, and is expected to be integrated into various industries in the future, highlighting it as a core element of industrial innovation as well as improving cloud efficiency. SK Telecom is currently collaborating with about 20 companies in fields such as mobility, healthcare, education, and gaming, testing and verifying 5G MEC through delivery robots, smart healthcare, augmented reality (AR)·virtual reality (VR) platforms, and remote video conferencing.

To expand MEC services, SK Telecom has been conducting a ‘5G MEC Service Proof of Concept (PoC)’ project since early this year, providing companies with cloud MEC resources and other infrastructure free of charge during the demonstration period.
