Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority and Yeosu Coast Guard Sign Marine Plastic Waste Resource Circulation Agreement
Promotion of mutual cooperation including campaign for separate disposal of plastic waste on ships
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Cha Min-sik, hereinafter referred to as the Authority) announced on the 11th that it has signed a business agreement with Yeosu Coast Guard Station (Chief Song Min-woong, hereinafter Yeosu Coast Guard) to establish a circular economy for plastic waste discharged from incoming ships.
This agreement is part of the "Gwangyang Port Marine Plastic Resource Circulation Project," and the Authority and Yeosu Coast Guard will continue mutual cooperation to ensure that plastic waste discharged from ships entering Yeosu and Gwangyang ports circulates properly.
According to the agreement, to achieve the common goal of marine environmental protection and establishing a sustainable resource circulation system, the Authority will be responsible for international certification of collected plastics and building a circulation system, while Yeosu Coast Guard will handle campaigns to prevent marine dumping of plastic waste and promote separate collection.
Previously, the Authority collected plastics discharged from incoming ships last year and produced 200 upcycled bags in collaboration with local social enterprises, and this year expanded the collection area to include the Yeosu region.
In particular, by signing a business agreement with Hyosung TNC, the Authority is promoting OBP (Ocean Bound Plastic) international certification and the production of 'Regen Ocean,' a recycled fiber made from marine plastic waste from Gwangyang Port, thereby expanding the circular network.
The Authority stated that this agreement is significant as it provides an opportunity to solve the fundamental problem of marine environmental pollution caused by plastic waste.
