Songpa-gu Installs 'Ice Pack Exclusive Collection Boxes' in All 27 Neighborhoods
Collection Boxes Installed at All 27 Community Service Centers... Reuse at Traditional Markets and More
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) will install 'ice pack dedicated collection boxes' at all 27 community service centers to promote the reuse of ice packs, which are major contributors to environmental pollution.
The district stated that ice packs take more than 500 years to decompose, causing serious environmental pollution if simply discarded.
However, with the recent increase in online food purchases and deliveries due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the amount of ice packs generated has surged, and most are being thrown away in standard waste bags.
Accordingly, to reduce the generation and disposal of ice packs, the district will install dedicated collection boxes to collect and wash used ice packs for reuse. The collected ice packs will be provided to local merchants such as traditional markets and Garak Market. However, only undamaged gel-type standard products (16*23cm, 500~600g) should be placed in the dedicated collection boxes.

Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “With the spread of delivery food and contactless consumption culture due to COVID-19, various environmental issues including the use of ice packs have arisen. We hope many residents actively cooperate in reusing ice packs to help Songpa-gu take the lead in resource saving and environmental protection.”
