COVID-19 Quarantine Battle, Economic War to Attract Samsung to 'Radioactive Industrial Complex'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] “We are fighting simultaneous wars: the war against COVID-19 and quarantine, and the economic war over semiconductor supremacy. Please grant clemency to the general, allow him to achieve merits on the battlefield, and let him pay the price for his sins.”
Oh Gyu-seok, the mayor of Busan's Gijang County, sent his third appeal to President Moon Jae-in requesting a pardon for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
On the 10th, after listening to the president’s special speech on the 4th anniversary of his inauguration, Mayor Oh said, “We are currently fighting both the quarantine war against COVID-19 and the economic war over semiconductor supremacy simultaneously.”
In his appeal, Mayor Oh stated, “In times of war, a leader’s decision is fairness itself, a precedent, and a consensus among the people,” urging for the pardon of Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
This is the third appeal following those on February 1 and April 15.
Gijang County is developing the ‘Southeast Radiation Medical and Science Industrial Complex,’ an industrial cluster for radiation technology (RT) leading the non-nuclear power field, on a site of 1,478,772㎡ (approximately 450,000 pyeong) with a county budget investment of 319.7 billion KRW.
Major national projects such as the export-oriented new research reactor development project, heavy ion accelerator, radioactive isotope fusion research infrastructure, and power semiconductor industry cluster development project are underway.

Mayor Oh laments the current reality where Samsung, which should be attracted to Gijang County as a future food source for Korea surpassing the county itself, cannot be invited for investment because the head of the large corporation is imprisoned, and thus requests the pardon of Vice Chairman Lee.
