Gyeongbuk Province Appoints Former Judge Lee Sundong as Inaugural Chair of Autonomous Police Committee

View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 9th that it has appointed Lee Soon-dong (66 years old), former judge of Daegu District Court, as the inaugural chairman of the Gyeongbuk Autonomous Police Committee on the 7th.
Appointed chairman Lee Soon-dong passed the 22nd Judicial Examination (Judicial Research and Training Institute Class 12) and served as a judge at Daegu District Court and Daegu High Court, as well as a research judge at the Supreme Court for 13 years. After working as a lawyer, he has been nurturing future talents at Yeungnam University since 2010.
Committee member Geum Tae-hwan, recommended by the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council, served as the dean of the Law School at Yeungnam University and is currently practicing as a lawyer. Committee member Lee Joo-seok is an administrative expert with over 30 years of experience at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Gyeongsangbuk-do, having served as Deputy Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Director of Local Finance and Taxation at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and President of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Research Institute.
Committee member Yoon Kyung-hee, recommended by the National Police Commission, has served as president of the Pohang Women's Association and co-representative of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Women's Organizations Federation. Committee member Lee Soon-ja, recommended by the Gyeongbuk Superintendent of Education, has worked in social welfare at Gumi City Hall for over 30 years.
Committee member Park Hyun-min, recommended by the Committee on Member Recommendations, served as a judge at Daegu District Court and is currently practicing as a lawyer. Committee member Seo Jin-gyo is a police administration expert with over 30 years of service at the Daegu and Gyeongbuk Police Agencies.
The Gyeongbuk Autonomous Police Committee consists of seven members. It uniquely includes three women and a human rights expert nationwide. By field, there are two from law and academia, one from the legal profession, one from local administration, one from social welfare, one from social organizations, and one from the police.
The Gyeongbuk Autonomous Police Committee will be launched on the 20th in accordance with the promulgation of related ordinances. The secretary-general will be a standing member appointed by the governor upon the committee's resolution and the chairman's recommendation.
The secretariat will be composed of one bureau, two divisions, and about 30 personnel. Local government officials and police officers will work together, with a pilot operation throughout June and full implementation starting in July.
Appointed chairman Lee Soon-dong stated, "We will strengthen the linkage between local and public safety administration to develop community-based policing services and also strive to communicate with frontline police officers, the executive agencies of the autonomous police."

Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, "The implementation of the autonomous police system, which will open a new horizon for local autonomy, is just around the corner," and emphasized, "I ask the Autonomous Police Committee, including appointed chairman Lee Soon-dong, to take the lead so that the Gyeongbuk-type autonomous police system can become a model nationwide."
