US Grocery Delivery Company Gopuff Enters European Market Through Acquisition of UK Fancy
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] American grocery delivery company Gopuff has acquired British grocery delivery company Fancy. Gopuff plans to enter the European market, including the UK, through Fancy.
According to major foreign media on the 6th (local time), Gopuff officially announced the acquisition of Fancy in the UK on this day. Gopuff did not disclose the specific acquisition amount.
Daniel Forkman, Senior Vice President of Business at Gopuff, stated, "To keep pace with Gopuff's growth, we have decided to strategically build the necessary physical infrastructure and space to respond immediately to new regions and customers," adding, "The acquisition of Fancy is an important first step to accelerate expansion in the UK and Europe and to accelerate investment in the global market."
Founded in the US in 2013, Gopuff currently delivers groceries and daily necessities within 30 minutes to customers in over 650 cities through a network of about 250 locations.
Fancy was established in the UK in January 2020 and currently operates in six locations including Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, and Leeds, with plans to start operations in London, Sheffield, and Nottingham.
Gopuff did not specify whether Fancy, acquired by Gopuff, will operate independently under the Fancy brand in the UK and European markets or be integrated into Gopuff.
The grocery delivery market has grown significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, in Europe, more than ten grocery delivery startups, including Fancy, are competing fiercely to capture market share. Accordingly, grocery delivery companies such as Gopuff are vertically integrating their businesses by building their own logistics warehouses and recruiting their own delivery drivers to expand their scale. According to major foreign media, since the outbreak of COVID-19, a total of $14 billion (approximately 15.7 trillion KRW) in investment has flowed globally into grocery delivery startups alone. The growth potential is also promising. According to global research firm Technavio, the grocery delivery market is expected to grow by $631 billion (approximately 710 trillion KRW) from last year through 2024.
