Police University Opens Transfer Admissions for the First Time in 40 Years... Selecting 50 University Students and Serving Police Officers
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The Korean National Police University is introducing a transfer admission system for the first time in celebration of its 40th anniversary.
On the 7th, the Police University announced the '2023 Academic Year Transfer Admission Plan' and disclosed the admission schedule. This transfer admission system was introduced as part of the Police University reform to open its doors and cultivate talented police personnel with diverse experiences.
The Police University transfer admission is divided into two categories: general university student admission and in-service police officer admission. A total of 50 students, 25 from each category, will be selected regardless of gender, and all transfer students will enter as third-year students in the 2023 academic year.
Applicants for the general university student admission must be between 17 and under 44 years old as of the transfer year, have completed at least 63 credits (as of December 31, 2022, equivalent to 2 years and 4 semesters) at a school under the Higher Education Act regardless of major, or have earned at least 70 credits through the credit bank system, or have graduated from a junior college. If there are no disqualifications and the applicant has an average score of 80 or above (converted to a 100-point scale) from their previous university, they can take the written exam without restrictions. The top three times the number of available spots based on written exam scores will proceed to physical and fitness tests, aptitude tests, and interviews.
The final successful candidates are determined by a combined score weighted as 60% written exam, 20% physical fitness test, and 20% interview. The written exam consists of two subjects: 'English' and 'Verbal Logic.' The English test focuses on reading comprehension and logical reasoning, while the verbal logic test assesses factual, inferential, and critical thinking skills across a broad range of fields including humanities, social sciences, science and technology, and cultural arts.
Applicants for the in-service police officer admission must meet the general university student admission qualifications and also have work experience and performance evaluations in policing considered. Additionally, they must have an English score of at least 625 on the TOEIC to apply.
The selection process involves the Police University notifying the National Police Agency and metropolitan/provincial police agencies of the successful candidates from the document screening. The National Police Agency and metropolitan/provincial police agencies then recommend a list of five times the number of available spots (125 candidates) to the Police University through a review committee evaluation. The Police University conducts the written exam for the recommended candidates and selects three times the number of available spots based on scores to proceed to physical and fitness tests, aptitude tests, and interviews to determine the final successful candidates. The written exam is a multiple-choice single subject test on 'Criminal Law,' including the Special Criminal Act.
The transfer admission schedule begins with the announcement of the recruitment guidelines in April next year. Application submissions start in October of the same year, followed by document screening and in-service police officer recommendation procedures, with the written exam and physical, aptitude, and fitness tests held in December. Interviews are conducted in January 2023, and the final successful candidates are announced in February.
The 2023 transfer students will attend classes with the 41st class of the Police University, who entered in the 2021 academic year, and graduate together as the same cohort before being appointed as lieutenants. Graduation requirements include completing 84 credits over two years, 48 hours of volunteer work, an English score (TOEIC 790 standard), and shooting practice. Transfer students will receive dual degrees in law or public administration and police studies, the same as freshmen.
