Say "Myeongye Gyuyul" Instead of "Owner Code"
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 3rd that the term 'honor code' be replaced with the Korean term 'myeongye gyuyul' (명예 규율). Also called 'a-neu code,' this term refers to a code of conduct or ethical principles that members of a specific organization follow to uphold the organization's honor. The selection of the alternative term 'myeongye gyuyul' reflected the results of a survey. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 26th to the 28th of last month with about 1,000 participants, 95.7% of respondents answered that it was appropriate. The alternative term was prepared by Saemalmoim, a committee that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives for the general public. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communication, and journalism participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the use of the alternative term, led by government ministries and media outlets.
