Yongsan-gu Hosts Children's Day 'Gonggi' Craft Experience Event
Programs Including Pottery Wheel Experience Operated at Yongsan Craft Center and Craft Promotion Center... Participation Fee Free to 40,000 KRW, Pre-registration and On-site Registration Available
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seong Jang-hyun) has prepared a craft experience event that the whole family can enjoy together to celebrate the 99th Children's Day.
The event locations are Yongsan Craft Center (274 Itaewon-ro) and Yongsan Craft Promotion Center (3rd floor, Yongsan I'Park Mall, 55 Hangang-daero 23-gil).
At the Yongsan Craft Center, visitors can try pottery wheel experience, hand painting, jewelry making, mother-of-pearl craft, bead accessory making, traditional gold ring making, folk painting fan drawing, and cloisonn? magnetic making.
The Craft Promotion Center operates a silver cloisonn? accessory making course.
Most programs are aimed at elementary school students (some have no restrictions), with experience times ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, and participation fees ranging from free to 40,000 KRW (including material costs).
Residents who wish to participate can make reservations in advance through the craft center website or directly with individual craft artists via mobile phone. Some programs also accept on-site registration on the day.
A district official said, “All visitors will receive a 10% discount coupon for the SPC flagship store Passion5 and the gallery cafe Sayu,” adding, “You will be able to enjoy Korean traditional crafts and the Hannam-dong cafe street all at once.”
On May 5, the district will also hold a social media (SNS) event for visitors to the craft center. By subscribing to the craft center’s YouTube channel, leaving supportive comments on posts, and showing this to staff, visitors can receive a ‘mini pottery vase (limited to 99 pieces)’ each.
Visitors who tag photos of the craft center on Instagram or Facebook with #YongsanCraftCenter, #YongsanCraftCenterChildren'sDay, #HannamDongOuting will also receive a vase.
In addition, the district plans to enhance the event atmosphere with a pottery flea market and a special exhibition titled ‘Becoming a Thousand-Year-Old Tree’ (inviting woodcraft master Kim Dong-gyu).
The Yongsan Craft Center is located in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. It has three basement floors and four above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 2,800㎡. It includes a craft product sales area (1st floor), pottery and hanbok experience rooms (2nd floor), craft learning spaces and workshops (3rd floor), and exhibition halls (4th floor), and offers various craft classes.
The Craft Promotion Center is 44㎡ in size. It is located in the pedestrian passage between the digital specialty store on the 3rd floor of the East Building of Yongsan Station I'Park Mall and the Shilla Duty-Free Shop, making it easy for domestic and international tourists to access Korean traditional crafts.
