Song Young-gil Elected as New Leader of the Democratic Party

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Song Young-gil (58, Incheon Gyeyang-eul), a five-term lawmaker, was elected as the new leader of the Democratic Party of Korea. In his acceptance speech, Leader Song said, “We will listen attentively to the vivid voices of the 2030 generation and, through party-government consultations, supplement measures for actual homebuyers and tax issues related to real estate.”
At the national delegate convention held on the 2nd at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, the newly elected Leader Song secured first place with 35.60% of the combined votes from delegates, party members, and public opinion polls. Candidate Hong Young-pyo received 35.01%, and candidate Woo Won-shik received 29.38%. Leader Song now bears the responsibility of leading party reform while managing the next presidential election fairly in March next year, following the public sentiment confirmed by the crushing defeat in the April 7 by-elections.
Leader Song stated, “I will communicate with our party’s proud presidential candidates and manage the presidential primary fairly,” adding, “I will embrace Candidate Hong Young-pyo’s passion for reform and Representative Woo Won-shik’s dedication to people’s livelihoods to unite the Democratic Party as one team.”
He mentioned real estate, vaccines, semiconductors, climate change, and peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula as the five core tasks and pledged to seek solutions. Leader Song said, “We will cooperate with the government to achieve herd immunity by November through securing vaccines and to establish South Korea as a vaccine production hub through Korea-US cooperation.”

Regarding real estate policy in particular, he stated, “Through party-government consultations, we will support the government’s 2.4 real estate measures and supplement policies for actual homebuyers and tax issues.” Leader Song concluded, “I will unite everyone with passion, dedication, and wisdom into one team and lead the way for South Korea’s strong recovery and leap forward.”
