Hampyeong County Council: "Japan Must Withdraw Decision to Discharge Fukushima Nuclear Wastewater"
Adoption of Resolution Condemning Japanese Government and Urging Withdrawal at the 266th Extraordinary Session
[Hampyeong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 29th, the Hampyeong County Council in Jeollanam-do adopted a resolution at the 1st plenary session of the 266th extraordinary meeting, urging the withdrawal of Japan's decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, and condemned the Japanese government's decision.
The resolution was jointly proposed by all seven council members, including Councilor Jeong Gyeong-im.
It called for "the Japanese government to immediately withdraw its decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water into the ocean, which threatens the health and safety of all humanity," and urged "the government of the Republic of Korea to strengthen cooperation with the international community and promptly prepare practical countermeasures."
Chairman Kim Hyung-mo stated, "Since this decision by the Japanese government could cause serious health problems for all our citizens, all council members will firmly oppose the discharge of contaminated water by the Japanese government and strive harder to protect the lives and safety of our residents."
Meanwhile, the extraordinary meeting, held over two days from the 29th to the 30th, will deliberate and resolve various agenda items, including the determination of the administrative audit period for 2021, the formation of a special administrative audit committee, and ordinance proposals.

In his opening remarks, Chairman Kim said, "Marking the 30th anniversary of the revival of local councils and in line with the comprehensive revision of the Local Autonomy Act for the first time in 32 years, we will strengthen our expertise and capabilities and strive to become partners of the residents in the new era of local autonomy."
