Completion of GGM Factory, First Application of 'Gwangju-type Job' Model
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] The Gwangju Global Motors (GGM) plant, the world's first socially integrated labor-management win-win job led by a local government, was completed in 1 year and 4 months.
It has been 7 years since the launch of the Gwangju-type job, known as Korea's first win-win regional job.
Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 29th that it held a completion ceremony at the GGM plant in the Bitgreen National Industrial Complex, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju.
The event, attended by President Moon Jae-in, was held under the theme "When many go together, even a rough road is enjoyable," and proceeded with a congratulatory performance, an introduction video of the GGM establishment process, a meeting among attendees, and a commemorative tree planting.
President Moon said, "The Gwangju-type job, Korea's first win-win regional job model, has finally reached its first destination after a difficult journey," and added, "Whenever we faced difficult problems and hurdles, Mayor Lee Yong-seop of Gwangju and the city actively mediated, and now a strong trust relationship has been established."
This visit by President Moon came 2 years and 3 months after attending the Gwangju-Hyundai Motor investment agreement ceremony on January 31, 2019, which marked the start of the Gwangju-type job project.
At the meeting, President Moon listened to opinions on episodes overcoming difficulties during the Gwangju-type job project, the driving force behind Gwangju's challenge success, employees' impressions and expectations, and requests for the company, promising support.
President Moon said, "In addition to wages paid by the company, the central government will also play a significant role in expanding social wages such as additional housing welfare in cooperation with Gwangju City."
Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, "The driving forces that brought this project, which was so difficult that almost no one was confident of success 2 to 3 years ago, this far are threefold: the earnest wishes of Gwangju citizens hoping for job creation for youth and revitalization of the underdeveloped regional economy, the bold decision of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Gwangju Regional Headquarters and Hyundai Motor looking toward the future for labor-management win-win, and the dedicated support of GGM executives and employees."
He added, "Decisively, President Moon Jae-in adopted the Gwangju-type job project as a campaign pledge and included it in the 100 national tasks. Accordingly, the central government actively supported it, making success possible."
The GGM plant, built on a site of 604,338㎡ (183,000 pyeong) in the Bitgreen Industrial Complex, consists of a body plant, painting plant, and assembly plant, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles.
In particular, it was constructed with three major concepts?eco-friendly, digital, and flexible?to flexibly respond to changes in the future automobile market, allowing conversion to eco-friendly vehicle production facilities.
The employment creation effect is expected to reach about 1,000 direct jobs and approximately 11,000 indirect jobs.
