Park Kwang-on Appointed as Chair of the Legislation Committee... Joo Ho-young Strongly Opposes
[Asia Economy Reporters Oh Ju-yeon and Park Jun-i] Park Kwang-on, a three-term lawmaker and Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Korea, has been nominated as the Chairman of the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee. Following the election of Yoon Ho-jung as the new floor leader on the 16th, the ruling party has reclaimed the vacant chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, prompting strong opposition from the opposition parties.
On the 29th, the Democratic Party's floor leadership nominated Park as the new chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and decided to put the nomination to a vote at the National Assembly plenary session that afternoon. Park was previously elected as the Chair of the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee in the 21st National Assembly but resigned after two months without completing his term due to his appointment as the party's Secretary General.
The opposition, which has criticized the ruling party's monopolization of standing committee chairmanships, expressed strong dissatisfaction.

Joo Ho-young, acting leader of the People Power Party, stated after the emergency committee meeting on the 29th, "There were talks about the Democratic Party pushing through the election of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee chairman, so I protested to the Speaker of the National Assembly that proceeding with an unagreed legislative schedule should never happen." He added, "Even though they hold 174 seats, if they elect the chairman without agreement with the opposition, the public's resentment will only grow." He also announced that a party meeting would be held that afternoon to discuss future response measures.
