Police to Expand Nationwide Operation of AI-Based 'Crime Risk Prediction and Analysis System'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] On the 29th, the National Police Agency announced that it will expand the nationwide operation of the "Crime Risk Prediction and Analysis System" (PRICAS), which combines artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to predict crime risk levels by region.
PRICAS is a system that analyzes big data integrating public safety and public data using AI with the latest algorithms to predict crime risk levels and the number of crime occurrences by region, and guides effective patrol routes.
It displays crime risk grades (levels 1 to 10) and predicted numbers of crime and disorder occurrences by specific areas (100m×100m) and time slots (at 2-hour intervals), analyzes patrol routes needed for high-risk areas, and automatically sends them to patrol car navigation (112 system) to enable proactive patrol activities by police stations and precincts.
In March, the police checked the stability and effectiveness of the system for one month targeting three city/provincial police agencies in Ulsan, northern Gyeonggi, and Chungnam. As a result, the predicted number of crimes and actual occurrences showed an average accuracy of 83.1%, and areas with high crime risk were confirmed to be regions with many actual crimes and 112 emergency calls.
Based on these pilot operation results, the police plan to expand PRICAS operation nationwide, further advance the system, and analyze nationwide public safety trends and the utilization effects of city/provincial police agencies to provide efficient crime prevention policies.
A National Police Agency official said, "The National Police Agency will continue to be responsible for developing comprehensive systems through public safety research and development (R&D) to enable optimized crime prevention activities in the field," adding, "City and provincial police agencies will appropriately utilize this according to local circumstances, focusing on protecting the public, and through role sharing, ensure that there are no gaps in public safety during the implementation of the autonomous police system."
