'Yangju Provision' Kim Han-jung Fined 900,000 Won in Second Trial... Avoids Disqualification
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] Kim Han-jung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea who was prosecuted for providing whiskey to voters ahead of the general election, avoided disqualification from office as the fine was reduced in the appellate trial.
The Criminal Division 6-1 of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judge Yongha Kim) sentenced Representative Kim to a fine of 900,000 won on the 28th for violating the Public Official Election Act. The court stated, "The guilt is not light," but added, "Considering that no additional benefits were provided, we impose a sentence that allows him to retain his position as a member of the National Assembly." In the previous first trial, Kim was fined 1.5 million won.

With the fine reduced in the appellate trial, Representative Kim has for now avoided disqualification. A member of the National Assembly is disqualified if sentenced to a fine of 1 million won or more for violating the Public Official Election Act. The prosecution has not yet decided whether to appeal. Earlier, Kim was indicted for providing 30-year-old whiskey while dining with four online community administrators ahead of the general election in October 2019.
