SKIET Uses '100% Green Energy' in Poland as Well
Contract Signed to Introduce Eco-Friendly Power at Poland Separator Factory Starting Mass Production in Q3 This Year
Reducing 70% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Separator Production Process
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SK Innovation's materials business subsidiary SK IE Technology (SKIET) will use eco-friendly electricity at its separator factory in Poland, which will begin mass production from the third quarter of this year.
On the 28th, SKIET signed a contract with the local Polish power company 'Tauron' to supply eco-friendly energy produced from solar, solar thermal, bio, wind, hydro, and geothermal sources.
With this, SKIET has become the first company to introduce 100% eco-friendly electricity not only to individual domestic business sites but also to overseas individual business sites. Since this year, SKIET has been using 100% eco-friendly electricity at all its business sites in Korea, including Jeungpyeong and Cheongju in Chungcheongbuk-do. SKIET plans to continuously promote the adoption of eco-friendly electricity at other overseas bases as well.
By adopting eco-friendly electricity this year, SKIET has instantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from its Korean and Polish business sites by 70%, achieving significant results in practical ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) activities. This is because about 70% of the total greenhouse gases generated in the separator manufacturing process come from electricity usage. This is why SKIET voluntarily adopts eco-friendly electricity despite the absence of regulatory requirements.
SKIET is leading efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, considered a global issue, and is striving to strengthen ESG management by conducting environmentally beneficial businesses. To replace internal combustion engine vehicles, one of the main causes of environmental pollution, SKIET manufactures lithium-ion battery separators (LiBS), essential materials for electric vehicle batteries.
Furthermore, SKIET is making efforts for the environment even in its production processes. SKIET plans to become a truly eco-friendly company by zeroing out various wastes generated during the process by 2030, in addition to reducing greenhouse gases.
SKIET is contributing to the expansion of the eco-friendly electric vehicle market through swift investments. Production capacity, which was 360 million cubic meters in early 2019, has increased about threefold to 1.03 billion cubic meters in just two years. By 2024, when the factories under expansion in Poland and China are completed, capacity will increase to 2.73 billion cubic meters. This scale can produce about 2.73 million electric vehicles equipped with high-capacity batteries annually.
