Collision Between Oil Tanker and Cargo Ship at Qingdao Port, China... Crude Oil Spill Occurs
Crack in 1 Million Barrel Capacity Crude Oil Tank
Crude Oil Leakage Amount Unconfirmed, Marine Pollution Concerns
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] A large oil tanker and a cargo ship collided off the coast of Qingdao Port in Shandong Province, China's largest crude oil transportation port, causing an oil spill. Chinese authorities stated that the amount of oil spilled is still being assessed, raising concerns about marine pollution in the Yellow Sea area.
According to foreign media including the AP News on the 27th (local time), at around 8:50 a.m., the large oil tanker 'A Symphony' anchored at Qingdao Port collided with the bulk cargo ship 'Sea Justice.' The collision caused a crack in the oil tank of the tanker, resulting in a large amount of crude oil spilling into the sea. It is reported that dense fog covered the Qingdao Port area at the time of the accident, and it is presumed that the two vessels failed to properly identify each other due to the fog, leading to the collision.
The China Maritime Safety Administration stated that the tanker was carrying 1 million barrels of crude oil and approximately 150,000 tons of bitumen, but the exact amount of oil spilled has not yet been disclosed. They also instructed vessels in the nearby waters to stay at least 10 nautical miles (18.5 km) away from the accident site and are currently conducting cleanup operations.

The tanker operator, Singapore's Goodwood Ship Management, told the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) in an interview, "The impact of the collision damaged the cargo tanks and ballast tanks, causing a significant amount of oil to spill into the sea. All crew members are safe without injuries, and we are currently working to prevent further leakage and conducting cleanup operations."
