Samsung Electronics Expands Dominance in Server SSD Market with Launch of SAS-4 Server SSD
Samsung Electronics has launched an enterprise server SSD that supports the latest SAS-4 standard. Compared to the widely used SAS-3, the speed is about twice as fast, and the product enhances performance by significantly improving server operational stability. Based on this, Samsung Electronics plans to strengthen its dominance in the server SSD market, where it already holds more than 40% market share.
On the 27th, Samsung Electronics released the PM1653, an ultra-high-speed enterprise server-dedicated SAS-4 SSD featuring 6th generation V-NAND for the first time. SAS is a high-speed data transfer interface used in storage devices for servers or large computers, and SAS-4 supports speeds of 22.5Gbps, about twice as fast as SAS-3. The newly launched PM1653 is available in various capacities ranging from 800GB up to 30.72TB to meet customer demands.
This product delivers industry-leading random read performance of 800K IOPS and continuous read speeds of 4300MB/s, approximately twice that of the previous generation. Along with the SAS-4 standard, it also supports interfaces from previous standards including SAS-3, allowing customers to operate enterprise servers flexibly. Additionally, the PM1653 supports dual ports, enabling service through the other port if one port fails, thereby enhancing server operational stability.
Samsung Electronics plans to secure the leading position in the server SSD market by preemptively capturing the emerging SAS-4 market. According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung’s server SSD sales market share rapidly grew from 32.4% in the first quarter of last year to 40.2% in the fourth quarter of the same year. It has widened the gap with second-place Intel (28.6% in Q4 last year) by more than 10 percentage points, increasing its market share.
The reason Samsung Electronics shows strength in the server SSD market is believed to be its diverse product lineup across different SSD interfaces. SSD interfaces are categorized into SATA, SAS, and NVMe SSDs depending on how the SSD storing data connects with other devices in PCs or servers. Prior to launching the server-dedicated SAS-4 SSD, Samsung announced in February that it would mass-produce high-performance NVMe SSDs for data centers. By releasing this product, companies using the existing SAS standard can upgrade server performance without major system changes.
Along with this product launch, Samsung Electronics revealed that it is collaborating with Broadcom, a leading HBA company and U.S. semiconductor chip manufacturer, to help customers operating enterprise servers upgrade their storage systems to the SAS-4 standard. Jas Tremblay, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Data Center Solutions Group, said, "Samsung Electronics’ PM1653 SSD and Broadcom’s next-generation SAS HBA products will provide up to five times the RAID 5 performance, playing a very important role in forming the SAS-4 ecosystem going forward."
