Gwangjin District Council Adopts Resolution Urging Suspension of Japan Fukushima Contaminated Water Discharge Decision
Call to Stop Arbitrary Decisions and Criminal Acts Destroying the Ocean, a Legacy for Future Generations
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The Gwangjin District Council (Chairperson Park Sam-rye) adopted a joint resolution on the 21st strongly condemning the Japanese government's decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant despite international concerns, and urging its immediate withdrawal.
On April 13, the Japanese government decided to discharge radioactive contaminated water generated from the 2011 nuclear power plant explosion accident. In response, the Gwangjin District Council strongly condemned the Japanese government and promoted the adoption of the resolution to urge the withdrawal of this irresponsible criminal act that threatens not only the current generation but also future generations.
Park Soon-bok, the representative proposer of the resolution, stated, “The basic policy on the disposal of treated water decided by the Japanese government is a unilateral decision made without sufficient consultation with neighboring countries and stakeholders. We urge the immediate withdrawal of the contaminated water discharge, which poses a serious threat to human health and life and threatens the fisheries industry not only in Korea but worldwide. We also call for transparent management and reasonable disposal measures through thorough verification procedures by international organizations.”
Chairperson Park Sam-rye added, “This issue is directly related to the lives of our citizens, so the council, as the representative body of the residents, has actively promoted this matter. The Japanese government must stop this criminal act that destroys the ocean, a treasure trove of marine ecosystems and a legacy to be passed on to our descendants, and make a proper choice for environmental preservation and humanity as a member of the international community.”
