Proposal of Metropolitan Transportation Issues to the Chairman of the Metropolitan Area Wide Transportation Committee
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] On the 19th, Heo Seong-mu, mayor of Changwon City, met with Choi Ki-ju, chairman of the Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee, to request support for key issues related to wide-area transportation.
Chairman Choi Ki-ju visited Changwon City to discuss government-level support measures after visiting the sites of the S-BRT and hydrogen trap introduction, which Changwon City is focusing on, as well as the Seongjusa Station transfer center.
The Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee (Daegwangwi) is a dedicated wide-area transportation organization launched in March 2019 to unify the wide-area transportation administrative system and improve the efficiency of wide-area transportation systems such as wide-area railroads, urban railroads, BRT, and congested roads.
Mayor Heo explained during the meeting with Chairman Choi that in order to smoothly promote the S-BRT pilot project selected by Daegwangwi, it is necessary to raise the national subsidy rate for S-BRT from 50% to 60% and improve the system for feasibility studies to introduce the hydrogen trap.
He also explained that with the establishment of Jinhae New Port confirmed and in preparation for the increase in wide-area transportation demand between Changwon and Busan, the Noksan-Jinhae wide-area railroad should be reflected in the 4th Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan.
Considering that the wide-area railroad project takes about 10 years from planning to opening, it must be included in this 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
He further explained that the Changwon Industrial Line should be constructed to perform the function of a wide-area railroad, taking into account the wide-area traffic volume with Daegu.
Since the traffic volume on the Jungbu Inland Expressway connecting Changwon and Daegu is increasing significantly every year, causing frequent congestion, it is necessary to shift from road transportation to railroad transportation.

Mayor Heo said, "Expanding a transportation network centered on wide-area railroads will suppress overcrowding in the metropolitan area, revitalize non-metropolitan areas, and lay the foundation for building the Bu-Ul-Gyeong megacity platform." He added, "We will actively share and cooperate with central government departments on necessary matters to expand wide-area transportation facilities suitable for the scale of a special city and do our best to ensure that pending projects proceed smoothly."
