[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The first rice planting of the year in Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam, took place on the 15th in the front fields of Deokam Village, Jigok-myeon.
Mr. Park Cheol-woo, who cultivates early rice every year in Deokam Village, Jigok-myeon, conducted the first rice planting in the front fields. Considering that the general rice transplanting season is around mid-May, this was done about 25 days earlier.
The first planted rice is the ‘Hiami rice’ variety, cultivated for early new rice shipment before Chuseok, and it is shipped as new rice through Hamyang Nonghyup.
Currently, 38 farms (35ha) in Hamyang-gun are cultivating rice for early shipment.
Farms practicing early cultivation annually produce under contract with Hamyang Nonghyup. The rice produced this way is sold at a higher price than regular rice.
