Chungnam Establishes 'Conservation and Management Plan' for Local Marine Ecosystems
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province is set to establish a plan for the conservation and management of the local marine ecosystem.
On the 14th, the province announced that it held a kickoff meeting for the "Chungnam Marine Ecosystem Conservation and Management Detailed Action Plan Establishment Project" the previous day at the West Coast Climate Environment Research Institute of the Chungnam Research Institute.
The research project is being promoted to set a comprehensive conservation and management direction for the marine ecosystem in the Chungnam region and to prepare a mid- to long-term detailed action plan in line with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ "2nd Basic Plan for Marine Ecosystem Conservation and Management (2019?2028)."
At the kickoff meeting, the West Coast Climate Environment Research Institute presented 5 major strategies and 14 key projects aimed at "creating new marine industry value" through marine ecosystem conservation and management.
The 5 major strategies are ▲ Protection of marine ecosystem habitats ▲ Protection and restoration of marine organisms ▲ Enhancement of marine ecosystem service benefits ▲ Advancement of the foundation for marine ecosystem conservation and management ▲ Systematization of marine ecosystem governance.
The key projects include ▲ Establishment of a marine ecological axis management system ▲ Expansion and strengthening of marine protected areas management ▲ Promotion of protection measures for major marine protected species, including reporting and compensation ▲ Regular monitoring of protected and endangered species ▲ Integrated management linked with Chungnam marine spatial planning ▲ Establishment of a regional-based management network for marine ecosystem issues ▲ Information exchange with advanced countries such as the Netherlands and Germany and strengthening Korea-China cooperation.
The province plans to finalize the project plan through a final report meeting in January next year and explore ways to link the detailed tasks established through the project with higher-level plans such as the "5th Comprehensive Marine Environment Plan" and new marine industries.
