[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] A large-scale offshore wind power complex project in Incheon is set to be actively promoted.
Incheon City announced on the 12th that it will accelerate the long-stalled offshore wind power complex project, which has been delayed for 13 years since signing a business agreement for the offshore wind power project with Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd. in 2008.
The city is focusing on obtaining a 300MW power generation project permit from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy this month for the waters around Jung-gu Yongyu, Muui, and Jawoldo, and plans to apply for a 300MW power generation project permit for the waters around Deokjeokdo, Ongjin County in May. The total project cost is estimated at around 3 trillion won.
The city has already completed the procedures for sea area occupancy and usage permits as well as basic sea area surveys, and held resident briefings in Deokjeok-myeon, Jawol-myeon, and Yongyu-dong to communicate with residents and fishermen.
This project was initially promoted through a business agreement with Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd., but faced difficulties securing project feasibility due to the lack of an institutional foundation.
However, it has gained momentum recently as institutional foundations have been established, such as improvements in the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) weighting system, following the national renewable energy transition policy, along with ongoing technological development of wind turbines.
