India Surpasses Brazil to Rank 2nd Globally in Total COVID-19 Cases with 170,000 New Infections
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] India, where nearly 170,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported, surpassed Brazil on the 12th to become the country with the second highest cumulative number of confirmed cases worldwide.
According to major foreign media, the Indian Ministry of Health announced that 168,912 new cases were reported on the day, bringing the total confirmed cases to 13,525,379.
The number of new confirmed cases broke the record for the highest daily count for 11 consecutive days from the 7th. The number of new deaths also increased by 904 on the day, pushing the total death toll beyond 170,000.
Brazil, which lost the second place, is still struggling to contain the spread. Brazil reported 37,537 new cases on the day, bringing the total confirmed cases to 13,482,543.

Experts analyzed that the spread of variant viruses and relaxed quarantine measures triggered the second wave. The Guardian stated, "The second wave became a reality due to large-scale elections held ahead of local elections, the insistence on holding religious events, and negligence of quarantine rules such as not wearing masks."
