Minister Jeon Hae-cheol Attends ICLEI Global Executive Committee Meeting... Announces Memorandum of Understanding Signing
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 12th that it will actively support local governments nationwide to participate in the international community's carbon neutrality efforts.
Minister Jeon Hae-cheol attended the ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) World Executive Committee meeting held from 3 PM to 6 PM Korea time via video and announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to continuously support local governments' carbon neutrality in the international community.
ICLEI is a global cooperative organization of local governments for climate change and sustainable development. Established in 1990, ICLEI is a world council of local governments that works in connection with the international community to strengthen the capacity of local governments worldwide to respond to climate change and support sustainable growth.
As of March, 1,750 local governments from 124 countries worldwide are members, and 48 local governments in South Korea, including Seoul, Busan, and Gyeonggi-do, are members.
This memorandum of understanding signing follows the expiration of the 'Ministry of the Interior and Safety?ICLEI Joint Agreement' signed from 2011 to 2021 and will be extended until 2031, ten years from now.
The MOU announcement ceremony was held online in front of about 50 people, including the ICLEI president and world executive committee members, and the MOU announcement ceremony of three organizations, including the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), and OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), was held together.
Through the signing of the MOU, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety will cooperate in international cooperation for responding to the climate change crisis and carbon neutrality and support each local government to participate in the 'carbon neutrality' policy.
Furthermore, it will present a green transition model toward sustainable cities and cooperate in its domestic and international dissemination. In particular, it plans to play a pivotal role in realizing '2050 Carbon Neutrality' by supporting the stable operation and activities of the Northeast Asia headquarters located in Seoul and the Korea office in Suwon.
