90s Iconic US Rapper DMX Dies of Heart Attack at 51 Years Old
[Asia Economy Reporter Junhyung Lee] DMX (real name Earl Simmons), a rapper who dominated the 1990s American hip-hop scene, has passed away at the age of 51.
According to major foreign media on the 9th (local time), DMX died at a hospital in New York, USA. On the 4th, DMX suffered a heart attack due to a drug overdose. He remained in a vegetative state at the hospital for several days before ultimately passing away.
DMX was born in 1970 in New York. He endured an unfortunate childhood, suffering abuse from his mother and others, and ran away from home to escape.
He began performing in his teenage years and gained recognition by selling his mixtapes on the streets. In 1992, he signed with 'Ruffhouse,' a subsidiary of Columbia Records, and released the single album 'Born Loser.'
From the late 1990s, he reached the peak of his career by consecutively topping the US Billboard main album chart, the 'Billboard 200,' with five albums including 'It's Dark and Hell Is Hot.' He continued to actively release new albums afterward. He also worked as the manager of the hip-hop label 'Ruff Ryders,' helping it grow into a prominent label.
