Four Sentenced to Prison for Sexual Exploitation in 'Je2n Room' Case
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The prison sentences handed down to the group that operated the so-called 'Second n-room,' threatening middle school girls and others to produce and distribute sexual exploitation materials, have all been finalized.
According to the legal community on the 6th, the Supreme Court's 3rd Division (Presiding Justice Min Yusook) upheld the original sentence of 7 years imprisonment in the appeal trial of Kim Mo (21, nickname Summersby), who was charged with violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse, among other charges.
Kim, along with Bae Mo (19, nickname Rori Daejang Taebeom) and others, was tried for threatening three victims, including middle school girls, whom they lured through phishing sites from November to December 2019, producing sexual exploitation materials and distributing them via Telegram group chats. They committed crimes such as creating and operating a second n-room similar to the n-room case.
The first trial sentenced Kim to 8 years imprisonment, but the second trial considered that Kim joined after some of the main perpetrators had already committed part of the crimes and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment.
The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, stating, "On the contrary, Kim played a pivotal role in executing the crime plan by resolving issues related to accessing information on the phishing site after joining the crime. There is no error in the original judgment recognizing guilt, nor any violation of the rules of evidence or misinterpretation of the law regarding joint criminal responsibility."
Earlier, in Bae's appeal trial, the Supreme Court also upheld the original sentence of long-term imprisonment of 10 years and short-term imprisonment of 5 years, the maximum sentence under the Juvenile Act, stating that "there is no ground to deem the lower court's decision to maintain the first trial's ruling as unjust."
During the first and second trials, Bae submitted more than 150 letters of apology, but his sentence was not reduced.
Another accomplice, Ryu Mo (21, nickname Slpeun Goyangi), had his sentence finalized after receiving 7 years imprisonment in the second trial and not appealing.
