[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City in Gyeongnam announced on the 5th that the Jinju City Symphony Orchestra will participate in the ‘2021 Symphony Festival,’ which boasts the highest prestige in Korea.
The 2021 Symphony Festival is the flagship program of the Seoul Arts Center and was first introduced in 1989 as a commemorative event for the 1st anniversary of the opening of the Seoul Arts Center Music Hall. Since then, it has established itself as the largest festival for symphony orchestras in Korea.
This year, it will be held from March 30 to April 22. Every year, symphony orchestras representing various cities participate, showcasing their skills in a classical music feast that attracts great interest and attention from classical music enthusiasts nationwide.
The Jinju City Symphony Orchestra, which first participated in 2005, will participate for the second time this year and hold a concert on the 8th at the Concert Hall of the Seoul Arts Center. This year’s festival, consisting of a total of 21 performances, will be held on the largest scale since 2012 under the keyword ‘New Normal.’
Conductor Jung In-hyuk will lead the concert, starting with Mozart’s overture ‘Don Giovanni,’ followed by a collaboration with cellist Kim Min-ji (professor at Seoul National University) performing Shostakovich’s ‘Cello Concerto No. 1.’ In the latter half, Brahms’ ‘Symphony No. 2,’ also known as the Pastoral Symphony, will be performed.
Cellist Kim Min-ji is currently a professor at Seoul National University, nurturing future musicians. She has served as the associate principal cellist of the Reina Sofia Orchestra in Spain, led by Lorin Maazel (the first Asian to hold this position), and as principal cellist of the Seoul Arts Center Festival Orchestra. She is also the music director of the Deoksugung Seokjojeon Concert, and a member of the Kumho Asiana Soloists, Cellista Cello Ensemble, and Opus Ensemble.
