First Dose Vaccinations Increase by 629 to Total 962,730, Representing 1.85% of the Population
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] Since the start of COVID-19 vaccination in South Korea, 1.85% of the entire population has completed the first dose over 38 days.
According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team (Promotion Team) on the 5th, 629 new vaccine doses were administered the previous day. Since it was a weekend, the number of vaccinations decreased compared to weekdays.
As a result, since vaccinations began domestically on February 26, a total of 962,730 people have completed the first dose. The vaccination rate compared to the domestic population (52 million) is 1.85%.
Among the cumulative first-dose recipients, 856,006 people received the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, and 106,724 people received the Pfizer vaccine.
With 66 additional second doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered the previous day, the cumulative number of people who completed the second dose reached 27,364. Simply adding the number of first and second Pfizer vaccine doses results in a total of 134,088 doses administered.
Among the 877,390 vaccination targets for the first quarter (February to March), 751,098 people received the first dose, showing a vaccination rate of 85.6%. The rate of those who completed the second dose among the first quarter targets is 3.12%.
Among the 4,135,551 vaccination targets for the second quarter (April to June), 211,632 people, or 5.1%, received the first dose.
Among these, for the elderly aged 75 and over, whose vaccinations began on the 1st of this month, 34,615 people (1.0%) out of a total of 3,499,518 have been vaccinated.
Currently, the government is conducting vaccinations using initial supplies of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines. The Pfizer vaccine was allocated to COVID-19 treatment hospital workers and vaccinations began on February 27, with second doses underway since the 20th of last month. Additionally, Pfizer vaccinations for elderly people aged 75 and over have been ongoing since the 1st of this month.

Meanwhile, both vaccines require two doses. The AstraZeneca vaccine’s second dose is administered at a 10-week interval, while the Pfizer vaccine’s second dose is given after 3 weeks.
