Supporting Myanmar's Democratization Movement with Member City Mayors of the Korean Human Rights Cities Association, Condemning the Military Coup Regime's Human Rights Suppression
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the morning of the 5th at 10:30 AM, Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, attended the 'Korean Human Rights Cities Council' declaration supporting the Myanmar democratization movement in front of the Embassy of Myanmar in Korea (12 Hannam-daero 28-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Hannam-dong), where 22 basic local governments participated, strongly condemning the Myanmar military's killings of civilians.
Mayor Lee stated, "I appeal for citizens around the world, beyond the Republic of Korea, to unite in solidarity for the restoration of freedom, human rights, peace, and democracy in Myanmar."
In his subsequent message of support and solidarity, he said, "People of Myanmar, stay strong! You can do it. The people of our Republic of Korea are also cheering for you," expressing encouragement and support to the people of Myanmar.
At the declaration event, Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu; Lee Dong-jin, Mayor of Dobong-gu; Kim Jeong-sik, Mayor of Michuhol-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City; Park Seung-won, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province; and Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, among other heads of basic local governments from member cities of the Korean Human Rights Cities Council, attended. The participants appealed for citizens worldwide, beyond Korea, to unite their strength for the restoration of freedom, human rights, peace, and democracy in Myanmar.
The Korean Human Rights Cities Council is a human rights consultative body among local governments nationwide based on policy exchange and mutual cooperation for the protection and promotion of human rights, currently comprising 22 basic local governments including Seongbuk-gu.
