Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop Meets with Austrian Ambassador to Korea to Discuss Cooperation Plans
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, met with the Ambassador of Austria to South Korea to discuss mutual cooperation.
According to Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 2nd, Mayor Lee met with Ambassador Wolfgang Angerholzer and his spouse to discuss cooperation plans between Gwangju and Austria in areas including culture and human rights.
The mayor said, “We welcome the ambassador and his spouse’s visit to Gwangju,” and requested, “Just as it is meaningful that Austrian artists are participating in this Biennale, please help foster a close friendship and cooperative relationship between Gwangju and Austrian cities.”
He added, “Your next destination is Sorokdo, and I sincerely thank Sisters Marianne and Margaret for their lifelong service.”
Ambassador Wolfgang Angerholzer responded, “Yesterday, I visited the Biennale and the May 18th Democratic Cemetery, and I felt that Gwangju has sublimated the tragic May 18th incident into a creative and hopeful positive image through the Biennale,” adding, “We will strive to showcase more Austrian culture and arts at the next Biennale.”
He continued, “Visiting Sorokdo is very important to my spouse and me,” and added, “We will take many photos at Sorokdo and convey to the nuns in Austria that Sorokdo, like a hometown, is doing well.”
The mayor also requested international cooperation and support for the Myanmar democratization movement.
Mayor Lee said, “The massacre and human rights violations against the people of Myanmar are proceeding very similarly to the May 18th Democratization Movement in 1980,” and asked, “Please help ensure that the Myanmar democratization movement receives support from people around the world.”
