Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Achieve Record Highest Sales in the U.S. in March
Record Monthly Performance Since Entry into the US Market
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Hyundai Motor Company and Kia sold approximately 145,000 units in the United States last March, marking the highest monthly sales record since their entry into the U.S. market in 1986.
Hyundai Motor America (HMA) announced on the 1st that it sold 78,409 units last month, a 117% increase compared to the previous year, setting a new monthly sales record since entering the U.S. market. The cumulative sales for the first quarter also reached a record high of 175,352 units, a 30% increase.
Kia Motors America (KMA) also broke its monthly sales record by selling 66,523 units last month, a 46% increase from the previous year. The cumulative sales for the first quarter rose 15% to 159,550 units, surpassing the previous record set in 2016 by about 9%. This marks the highest sales record since Hyundai entered the U.S. market in 1986 (Kia in 1994).
A Hyundai official explained, "The high sales growth rate partly reflects the base effect from the COVID-19 pandemic last year," adding, "However, the recovery of the U.S. market and strong sales of SUVs including the Genesis GV80 contributed to achieving the highest performance since entering the U.S. market."
According to Hyundai, SUVs increased by 141%, passenger car models by 120%, and eco-friendly vehicles by 235%, all showing triple-digit growth rates. By model, the Tucson led the performance with sales of 15,744 units, a 159% increase compared to the previous year. Randy Parker, Senior Vice President of HMA, stated, "This result was achieved through strong consumer trust, stable inventory supply, and an attractive lineup," and added, "With the start of sales of the best-selling model, the All-New Tucson, we will further increase our market share."
