Muan-gun, 6·25 War Hero Late Corporal Park Sa-gyu Receives Hwarang Military Merit Medal 71 Years Later

View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Muan County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 1st that it held a ceremony to present the Hwarang Military Merit Medal to the bereaved family of a war veteran who made great contributions during the Korean War but had not been recognized until now.
The veteran was the late Corporal Park Sa-gyu of the 5th Infantry Division of the Army, and the recipient was his bereaved spouse, Kim Gwi-rye (96 years old). To honor the elderly recipient who has mobility difficulties, Governor Kim San of Muan County personally visited to present the medal certificate, plaque, and medal.
Kim Gwi-rye, who lost her husband at a young age and raised two sons and two daughters alone, became emotional upon receiving the medal, saying, "It feels as if my husband has come home alive."
The children also expressed their gratitude, saying, "Although we grew up without knowing our father's face, we are truly happy that his dedication to the country is finally being recognized," and "Today is a very meaningful and honorable day for our entire family."
Governor Kim San told the bereaved family, "You must have endured a lot of emotional hardship," and added, "I am very pleased and relieved to finally recognize the heroic achievements of a war hero by presenting the Hwarang Military Merit Medal."

Meanwhile, there are currently 471 surviving war veterans in Muan County. Since 2021, the county has been continuously promoting projects to honor and support war veterans, including increasing the honorary allowance for veterans (80,000 KRW per month), promoting the construction of a war veterans memorial tower, and providing subsidies to veterans' organizations.
